How to get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews
A practical checklist for becoming the source an assistant quotes, platform by platform.
Getting cited by an AI assistant means the model uses your content to answer a question and names you as the source. There is no single switch for it, but there is a repeatable method: make your answers easy to lift, make your site easy to crawl, and earn the authority each platform trusts.
The three big platforms weigh sources differently, so part of the work is general and part is platform-specific. Here is the checklist we run for clients, in order.
Write answers a model can lift
Start every important section with its answer in the first sentence, then add the context. Write passages that stand on their own, with no reliance on 'as mentioned above', so a model can quote them out of context. Prefer plain definitions in the form 'X is...', and back claims with a number or a named example, because specific passages are quoted far more often than general ones.
Make the page crawlable by AI bots
AI crawlers read your raw HTML and most do not run JavaScript, so any content that only appears after a script runs is invisible to them. Server-render what matters. Confirm your robots.txt allows the AI crawlers you want, such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, and publish an llms.txt file at your root as a plain-text map to your best pages.
Add machine-readable structure
Give the model labels for what it is reading. A clean heading hierarchy maps sections to the questions people ask. Schema.org structured data marks up your organization, articles, and FAQs so a model knows what your page is and who wrote it. This is the difference between a model guessing at your content and a model being told.
Earn the authority each platform trusts
This is the part you cannot fake with formatting. Google AI Overviews lean on pages that already rank, so traditional SEO and domain authority matter most there. ChatGPT leans on established, well-cited reference sources, so being mentioned across the web helps. Perplexity leans on community discussion and citations, so presence on the sites people reference, including Reddit and industry forums, moves the needle. Being cited by all three for the same query is rare, so treat each as its own target.
Measure and repeat
Ask each assistant the questions your customers ask and record who it cites. Watch analytics for referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI surfaces. Track brand mentions, not only links, because a model can name you without sending a click. Then rewrite the pages that lost, and ask again.
Questions
How do I get ChatGPT to cite my website?
Write answer-first, self-contained passages, make the page crawlable without JavaScript, add Schema.org markup, and build authority through mentions on established sources ChatGPT trusts.
Which AI crawlers should I allow in robots.txt?
To be eligible for citation, allow the crawlers of the assistants you care about, such as GPTBot for ChatGPT, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google's crawlers for AI Overviews.
Do ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI cite the same sources?
Rarely. Each weighs sources differently, so a page cited by one is often not cited by another. AI visibility is won platform by platform, not once.
SEO ranks a page for a person to click. GEO gets a passage quoted by a model. What actually differs, and what to do about it.
A plain-text map for AI crawlers. What it does, what it does not, and an honest read on whether to bother.
Search traffic increasingly arrives pre-answered. What it takes to be the source an assistant cites, not the tenth blue link.
